Equity Through OER: A Blueprint and Rubric

The number of institutions/individuals adopting OER is increasing. But most are at different stages and equity may not even be a consideration in the process. The DOERS3 OER Equity Blueprint and Rubric, offer a framework for self-assessing current initiatives and provide guidance for moving forward while closing the equity gap.

Launched in Fall 2018, DOERS3 is a collaborative of public higher ed systems in the US and Canada focused on supporting and sustaining OER initiatives to achieve equity and student success at scale. One of the five major focus areas is the Equity Blueprint to address equity gaps in OER. In this presentation, participants will reflect and share with others about the status of their current OER initiatives and explore ways in which OER can be in the foreground for promoting equity. We will review the OER Equity Blueprint and Rubric, a comprehensive self-assessment tool to guide students, faculty, administrators, academic practitioners and leaders, and discuss ways in which attendees can adapt these resources for their own use in their courses or at their institutions to better understand and act on the equity dimensions of OER.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Identify ways in which OER can close the equity gap
  • Self-assess the current status of an OER initiative using an equity lens
  • Identify opportunities to make OER resources more equitable from early stages, not an afterthought
  • Utilize self-assessment to develop an action plan for institutional or system OER and equity efforts
