An estimated 1.2 to 1.6 million college students (Gurung et al, 2016) take an introduction to psychology course (PSY101) providing an opportunity for diverse college students to learn about themselves and others, and practical life skills. The American Psychological Association (APA) recently released a set of integrative themes for PSY101. Psychology faculty worked within a district of 10 colleges and the district office to design and produce a creator retreat to integrate district-approved course competencies for PSY101 and the APA integrative themes. The Maricopa County Community Colleges District (MCCCD) in Phoenix, Arizona, brought together faculty from across 7 community colleges to create openly-licensed activities and assignments. The activities were shared in a showcase at the conclusion of the 2-day event. Showcase attendees included colleagues contextualizing their course with PSY101 and other psychology faculty. We will highlight lessons learned, next steps, and considerations in pulling together a collaborative course materials creation retreat. This is the district’s second creator fest and the first step for the district psychology faculty to work together to collaborate, learn, and support teaching practices for PSY101.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Explain how faculty across multiple colleges collaborated to create activities and assignments to support the newly released American Psychological Association’s Integrative Themes for Introduction to Psychology courses
  • Identify steps, strategies, and considerations for implementing a creator fest at your campus
