One of the biggest challenges with Open Educational Resources (OER) can be finding them. And once you do find them, how do you decide how to choose among the overwhelming number of choice? BCcampus asks “how do we surface OER in a way that leads us to use it?” We are redesigning our OER repository to make finding course materials, including courses and textbooks, more meaningful by overcoming the barriers of choice, determining relevancy, and quality. While there are many existing repositories that work to achieve this, our team has been focusing on how to distinguish our repository with a curated collection and user experience for BC and Canadian educators.

This discussion session will provide the opportunity for us to share what we have been learning through the development of our repository and open courses. You will hear from members of our team including our User Interface designer, Publishing Manager, Instructional Designers and Open Course Lead all bringing different needs and perspectives to this challenge.

Moreover, we want to hear from you! As a participant you will share your own experience finding and choosing course materials. What turns you away from a repository? What would a perfect experience look like? How do you evaluate OER once you find it? Once you find OER, then what? Hear from others about their approaches to finding the best OER for their needs. For those new to OER, what is the biggest barrier in finding OER?

The session will be jam-packed with activities to get the conversation going and flowing.

Join us to share ‘finding' secrets, tips and tricks!

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Explore new ways, tips and tricks to finding OER
  • Describe the considerations that go into building a repository
  • Discuss what occurs beyond the initial search for OER
