Sowing Seeds for Sustainability: How a Small Grant Helped a Library-Led OER Initiative Grow

This presentation will describe our experience conducting a grant-funded, small stipend awarding Open Educational Resources fellowship for allied health and health sciences faculty. We will provide background on Open Touro, our OER initiative, and discuss how a grant from the Network of the National Library of Medicine-Middle Atlantic Region bolstered the initiative. Sharing tips and best practices from grant proposal to finished fellowship, we will underscore how the fellows’ OER projects will help in advocating for OER and building a stronger OER program college-wide. We also will talk about our train-the-trainer workshop for librarians, whose newly gained knowledge and interest in OER will help to broaden OER advocacy across our Libraries and institution.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Hear about a library’s OER initiative using grant support to cultivate OER advocates and ambassadors
  • Learn about creating a faculty fellowship to demonstrate the sustainability of a small and previously unfunded OER program
  • Foster the knowledge and confidence of librarians to support faculty using OER at your institution
  • Determine if a similar approach fits your institutional OER goals
  • Understand the challenges and successes of collaborative projects during the pandemic
