Adopting OER (open educational resources) is rarely a simple one-for-one switch. Adoption usually involves a certain amount of adaptation. That could mean reordering chapters, embedding media, editing text and images to be responsive to new cultural contexts, or creating a “Frankenbook”—books that are made up of chapters from several open sources. In this session, Amy Song will demonstrate how to use Pressbooks Directory to find openly licensed material, clone OER into the Pressbooks Authoring & Editing Platform, add/remove/rearrange chapters, embed new media, and perform other updates to a text in order to prepare it for a class (online or face-to-face). She will also point to other technology possibilities should participants not have access to Pressbooks, and will share places where viewers can find openly licensed content.
After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
Know where to find OER and other content repositories across the web
Evaluate OER to use and remix
Use Pressbooks or another content creation platform to adapt or remix OER
Identify and use OER repositories to find resources for a specific course
