Education is an indispensable tool for economic, political, cultural and social development of a nation as well as an instrument of change. In other words education is seen as the source of growth and development of an individual. Education is fostered and attainable through the process of teaching and learning. This process involves quality instructional practice to transfer knowledge otherwise known as pedagogy. Pedagogy is described as the method and procedure of teaching that encompasses the passage of knowledge in the classroom setting by communicating contents of courses and subjects to students. Instructional pedagogy involves the incorporation of an array of teaching strategies that support intellectual engagement, connectedness to the wider world, supportive classroom environments and recognition of differences across all key learning, and subject areas. Open pedagogies programme includes, planning, designs and implementation of the teaching and learning that consider sharing, networking, and co-creation of knowledge base by educators. Characteristics of the learning processes based on this pedagogy are to challenge students to develop skills like communication, in collaboration with learners and practitioners from other cultures, using ICT tools. These skills are considered important in this 21st century. Open pedagogy and practices with the use of ICT tools therefore, enhance sustainable education in Nigeria.

Teaching and learning to citizens of Nigeria with the use of open pedagogy and practices is of great importance to further the educational system. This is because open pedagogy can initiate innovation in teaching and learning methods with the use of technologies and open resources. Nevertheless, it has been established that the adoption of open pedagogies by teachers is not enough, since positive outcomes of learning require an awareness and active involvement of students. Other challenging factors are institutional support, institutional technology. This is an exploratory study that will be extracting information from primary and secondary data (Internet sources, books ,journal articles). Also, research on teachers' perceptions and beliefs about open pedagogy in Nigeria is still clumsy and not clear enough, hence the standard of education in the contemporary Nigeria has now become a paramount issue for national debate as some are of the opinion that the standards of education in Nigeria today seems to be declining day by day. This paper therefore intends to examine the open pedagogy and practices for sustainable education in Nigeria.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Stating importance of the Education in relation to sustainable development
  • Discuss the relevance of Open Pedagogy in relation to sustainable development
  • Examine the characteristics and sensitization of Open Pedagogy
  • Examine the various challenges in achieving viable Open pedagogy
  • Stating the conclusion and recommendation
