The new normal occasioned by COVID-19 pandemic has necessitated the consideration of innovation and new technologies in the strategy, technique and policies of educational system in Nigeria. This is why stakeholders in the educational sector have started to focus attention on the adoption of technologies in teaching and learning at all levels, which has brought to the fore the consideration of open education as a viable option. Open Education is a kind of education that employs the use of technologies to facilitate collaborative, flexible learning and open sharing practices that empower educators to benefits from the best ideas of their colleagues. Open Education encompasses resources, tools and practices that employ a framework of open sharing to improve educational access and effectiveness worldwide.

Every Nigerian child deserves access to high-quality educational experiences and resources, whether in the urban or in the rural areas. This is important in the sense that it gives every child the opportunity to learn at his or her pace if the Sustainable Development Goals 4 and Agenda 2030 are to be achieved. Meanwhile for Open Education to be successful, there are basic strategies,techniques and policies that must be put in place. This is an exploratory study which will use mainly primary and secondary data from journal articles, books, government publications, Internet data as well as personal observations and residual knowledge to explore the strategy that could be used to successfully implement Open Education at the primary and secondary school levels, the techniques that could be used in other to achieve the objectives of Open Education as well as the policies that will help the government to actualise this plan.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Apply knowledge of the concept of Open Education in Primary and Secondary Schools
  • Understand the importance of Open Education in post-COVID-19 era
  • Understand the strategy that could be used to successfully implement Open Education in Primary and Secondary Schools
  • Apply knowledge of the techniques that could be used to achieve the objectives of Open Education in post-COVID-19 era
  • Understand the policies that will help the government to actualise this plan
