This presentation will address the development of an online, low-cost option for non-science majors to complete their general education laboratory science requirement. To increase affordability and accessibility, the course was designed to utilize an Open Educational Resource (OER) textbook for lecture and has no laboratory kit requirement. The laboratory component utilizes a combination of virtual exercises and “hands-on” laboratory experiments designed to utilize common, household materials. This option supports student enrollment that may have previously been limited by cost, physical restraint, and/or day/time availability. To ensure accessibility for all students, the course was made ADA compliant and was designed utilizing Quality Matters (QM) standards.
After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
Recognize the importance of affordability and accessibility of course offerings
Implement accessible features into course offerings
Select open educational resources for course offerings
