Women of Color are underrepresented as creators of Open Educational content despite their involvement as thought-leaders, librarians, instructional designers, and faculty members in Open Ed. In this lightning talk, Ursula Pike will present the insights of six women of color reflecting on their involvement with the Open Education movement. Their stories are part of OERigin Stories an openly licensed resource developed as part of the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program. OERigin Stories is a collection of the stories of six women of color, all Open Education leaders in different contexts. The women reflect on their entrance into Open Education, where they do and don’t see themselves within the movement, and what is missing from Open Education. The audience will be invited to consider how their unique identities intersect with Open and what they think is missing in the Open Education movement.
After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
See examples of culturally specific approaches to Open Education
Identify advantages to Open Educational Resources beyond cost savings
Have a model for asking people from different backgrounds about their approach to Open Education
