This presentation introduces instructors to using FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data) in the classroom. The flagship database from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis allows instructors to place abstract concepts in realistic and relevant contexts, building data literacy and numeracy skills. Participants will learn how to use data to answer the following questions: What is the value of women’s domestic labor that goes unpaid? How did the COVID-19-induced recession impact men and women employment? What fraction of the labor force do workers with a disability represent?

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Build and read FRED graphs describing diversity and inclusion topics
  • Organize data visualizations in a dashboard suitable for remote learning
  • Leverage online instructional modules for hybrid or online instruction
  • Develop situated learning activities based on real data
