This project was funded by a grant (Affordable Learning Georgia) that houses free resources like Galileo (https://oer.galileo.usg.edu/) to be used by the colleges of Georgia. Georgia is currently examining general education requirements for the university system and has proposed to incorporate information literacy as a standard for assessing some college courses. This will most likely require many faculty to develop new activities. This project addresses this issue in four disciplines with an interdisciplinary group. The librarian is the information literacy expert while the faculty serve as the content experts.
The Association of College and Research Libraries’ (ACRL) information literacy frame Research As Inquiry supports that information literacy has unique, tacit elements in different academic disciplines. In this project, an academic librarian collaborated with faculty in four diverse disciplines—psychology, land management, biology and chemistry—to develop open educational resources for discipline specific information literacy curriculum. All of the faculty are involved in teaching research-based courses. The Research As Inquiry frame of the ACRL information literacy framework was incorporated into courses by faculty to address critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
This lightning talk will be presented by the librarian and the psychology faculty member and will address lessons learned from the project, as well as how this project contributed to growth and understanding in teaching about research and information literacy. Attendees will learn about how this case study contributed to open pedagogy and practices as well as how a collaboration within an interdisciplinary community was employed to make the project successful.
