The University of Alberta Library has been building support for Open Education on campus for a number of years by promoting the use of Open Educational Resources (OER) alongside other stakeholder groups within the university. In 2019, we solidified the Library's role in OE by self-hosting an instance of the Pressbooks open book platform to advance the creation and adaptation of OER on campus. The transition to online learning in fall 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic also led to significant growth in our OER activity as we saw a dramatic increase in demand for promoting, locating, and creating OER. We trained a group of staff to identify high demand textbooks and locate OER to replace existing course material for over 130 courses, a service which will remain permanent. As the academic year progressed, we recognized the need for a coordinated approach, and formalized and expanded our activities with the creation of an Open Education team. With a mandate to increase OER adoption and use, and reduce textbook costs for students, the OE team is responsible for bringing together the Copyright Office, Centre for Teaching and Learning, Students’ Union and the Library. Additionally, the team features a diverse range of library staff, covering multiple subject areas and functional positions. This broad membership gives us the expertise and capacity to build a culture of Open Education across campus. This team currently supports OE initiatives within the library and strategizes to promote and advocate for OER across campus. This presentation will discuss the formation of our Open Education team and the strategies we are using to meaningfully build a “culture of openness” at the University of Alberta. In addition, we will share advice for those hoping to implement a similar program involving multiple stakeholders.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Identify how an academic library can support the adoption, creation and adaptation of Open Educational Resources
  • Build strategies for Open Education advocacy at your institution
  • Identify and approach key stakeholders on campus
