Research shows that first-generation college students have a harder time adjusting to the higher education system, but with proper support (like the TRIO Student Support Services program and caring and informed instructors), they can get acclimated to college life and succeed academically. Through partnership with my university’s TRIO program and state-level higher education OER grants, I experimented with teaching two semesters of first-generation college students in first-year composition classes (Beginning Composition and Advanced Composition) using open educational resource materials.
In this lightning talk, I will share the resources I used to build my classes and support students, ways I am using student-created OER projects to empower first-year writers, and what I have learned from both student feedback and participation in a state-wide OER Community of Practice during the 2020-21 academic year.
After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
Understand how OER can help at-risk populations succeed
Discover resources they can use in their own courses
Apply ideas on how to incorporate OER learning games (as well as written and visual texts) in their curriculum
Understand how students can create their own OER content
