Development and Sustainability of an OER Textbook

Feedback form is now closed.

The cost of college textbooks and supplies have increased substantially in the past few decades, leading some students to not purchase textbooks or take fewer courses. In line with efforts to reduce costs and increase student access, open educational resources (OER) have gained popularity. Faculty are increasingly aware of OER, but often many questions remain. How does one find OER? Are they sufficiently current and effective to use in teaching? Is it worth it to customize an OER text for my course? This presentation will describe a process that can be used to develop an OER textbook (using a nutrition textbook to illustrate the process). Description of the ongoing project that created an Introduction to Nutrition textbook used by over 1,200 students during the 2020-21 academic year at Metropolitan State University of Denver and saving students over $200,000 will be shared. Attendees will learn about the process used to develop this resource including feedback and contributions from students, teaching assistants, and instructors. In addition, qualitative and quantitative outcomes from its use over the past year will be shared. Lastly, strategies implemented to encourage sustainability and increase accessibility and diversity of the text/course will be discussed.

After participating in this session, attendees will be able to:
  • Develop a plan for iterative OER adoption or adaptation
  • Implement strategies to increase sustainability, accessibility, and diversity of an OER text
